Maximum residue limits (MRL) are a globally accepted trade tool in the food safety basket. It offers consumers a guarantee that fresh produce is safe for human consumption. The traces of pesticide found on treated products are called residues, and MRLs, which may differ per country, set the highest legally tolerated level for these residues. MRLs are set at exceptionally conservative levels and merely detecting a residue does not mean it poses a risk to human health, however it is imperative that farmers adhere to the label directed use of crop protection products to ensure that these limits are adhered to.
