The Department of Environment, Fisheries & Forestry’s (DFFE), under its National Environmental Management: Waste Act of 2008 (Act No. 59 of 2008) introduced the ‘Extended Producer Responsibility’ legislation via regulation No. R1184 of 5 November 2020 (with revision published in 2021). This legislation supports the South African government’s drive to create a ‘circular economy’ for all packaging types in the country, so that as much packaging material as possible is collected and recycled versus ending up in landfills.
