Risk vs Hazard

Hazard is not the same as risk and it is important to understand the difference when it comes to making decisions about safety.


The difference between hazard and risk is that hazard refers to the intrinsic properties of something that can cause harm, while risk is the probability of harm occurring. The issue of pesticides in the South African context, as well as the regulation thereof, is based on a risk approach, and not a hazard approach.
